Tonemapping

I have to do more research into color grading, I know too little about it.

This page seems to have really great info about it:

Minimal Color Grading Tools

Since the topic of conversation is HDR, then, the BenQ PD3220U seems like a very poor choice. HDR10 really only starts at 1000 nits and the PD3220 only hits 350 nits. Good blacks are also important for HDR, and the PD3220 has a pretty standard IPS panel instead of OLED or QLED, so it's not very good for that either. When it comes to disciplines benefitting from HDR lighting is obvious, but material or texture artists not so much. VFX, maybe, but what artists really benefit from is coverage of color gamut. The color gamut is generally agreed on to be covered at >99% is DCI-P3 (see more below). That color gamut is already covered by a monitor like the Dell U2723QE, which coincidentally also has a higher nits than the BenQ without even being HDR. When looking at certifications from cinema, streaming services, and Dolby (Microsoft games) they recommend:

The BenQ PD3220 does not meet that description, neither on nits nor on P3 coverage (95% as opposed to >99%). We don't have to break the bank obviously but that's not a good choice. So in conclusion, I don't recommend "regular artists" getting an HDR monitor since they only really benefit from (good) color gamut coverage, DCI-P3 in particular. When it comes to discplines benefitting from HDR, I strongly advice against the BenQ PD3220U since on paper that doesn't meet the specs.

I know a lot more about tonemapping now, I just have to document it.
